Printing from the Emory Healthcare Virtual Desktop (VDT)

All applications on the Virtual Desktop can print to the applicable Emory Healthcare network printers.

Effective with the September 13 rollout, the following applications can print to locally attached printers on Windows-based systems. (Local printing is not available from Macintosh computers.)

  • GroupWise
  • Internet Explorer
  • Lotus Notes
  • Microsoft Office applications

The ability to print to local printers from these specific applications is possible through a locally-installed print-redirector client called Simply Printing.

Emory Healthcare managed desktop computers have already had this Simply Printing client installed on them "behind the scenes."

If you are accessing the Virtual Desktop from home or from a computer on or off campus that is not managed by Emory Healthcare IS, you'll want to click on the link to install the Simply Printing client

Note: If you see the message telling you that you do not have the Metaframe Presentation Server Client installed, do that first...you must have the ICA client installed before you install the Simply Printing client.

The link to install the Simply Printing client is in the Message Center area of the Virtual Desktop as shown in the example above.

You may see this window asking if you want to run or save this file - click Run.

You may also see a window indicating that the publisher could not be verified - click Run.

The first actual installation window looks like this. As with most Windows installations, closing all other open applications before installing this software is strongly recommended. When you've done so, click Next.

The next window tells you to close all open ICA sessions - that means you should exit the EHC Virtual Desktop before continuing. If you haven't already closed that window, you may use Alt TAB to go back to the Virtual Desktop window, click the X to close it. Then you can click Next on this window.

Note: checking the box as shown in the example is optional and adds an icon to your Control Panel.

You will next see a "Please wait" window while the installation takes place and then you will see this window. Click Finish.

You may now start Internet Explorer and login to the Virtual Desktop.
