Cable or DSL Installation Instructions for SecuRemote

The following information is listed by Internet Service Providers (ISP) in the Atlanta area. Those of you outside the Atlanta area may find a similar configuration hereafter.

Note on Routers:  You will not need to follow the instructions below if you have a router.  Regardless of your ISP, the installation of SecuRemote is the same if you are using a router.  Please be sure that it is a router and not simply a cable modem or a DSL modem.  Ensure that you have connectivity to your ISP before installing SecuRemote. Install SecuRemote, refer to the installation instructions, and select "Install on all network adapters" when prompted.

Generally, if you don't have a router and you don't have cable Internet, ensure that you have connectivity to your ISP before installing SecuRemote. Install SecuRemote, refer to the installation instructions, and select "Install on dial-up adapters only" when prompted.  See below for more specific instructions.

Charter, Comcast, and other cable providers

This should work for all Windows operating systems. Cable providers typically do not install extra drivers to connect their customers to the internet. Ensure that you have connectivity to your ISP before installing SecuRemote. Install SecuRemote, refer to the installation instructions, and select "Install on all network adapters" when prompted.

BellSouth DSL

Many people have experienced difficulties using SecuRemote with BellSouth DSL.  We recommend changing to a different ISP.  You can find a different service provider here or here.

Windows XP

BellSouth supports the use of Window XP's built in support of DSL connections.  You do not need to use a third-party software to connect to your ISP.  Ensure that you have connectivity to your ISP before installing SecuRemote. Install SecuRemote, refer to the installation instructions, and select "Install on dial-up adapters only" when prompted.

Windows 2000, NT, 9x, and ME with Tango

If you are using Siemens's tango Access or Fine Point Networks's WinPoET PPPoE client to access the Internet using BellSouth DSL, installation is simple.  Ensure that you have connectivity to your ISP before installing SecuRemote. Install SecuRemote, refer to the installation instructions, and select "Install on dial-up adapters only" when prompted.

Windows 2000, NT, 9x, and ME with Enternet 300

If you are using Enternet 300 to access the Internet using BellSouth DSL, installation is much more difficult. We suggest uninstalling Enternet 300 and installing Siemens's tango Access or Fine Point Networks's WinPoET PPPoE client instead. If this option is not feasible, see below for installation instructions per operating system.

Windows 2000

BellSouth installs a software client called Enternet 300 to connect you to the internet.  SecuRemote will need to be unbound from all adapters except for this one after you install SecuRemote.  Ensure that you have connectivity to your ISP before installing SecuRemote. Install SecuRemote, refer to the installation instructions, and select "Install on all network adapters" when prompted.  After the reboot, you will need to edit the properties of each network adapter in Start, Settings, Network and Dial-up Connections.  Right-clicking and selecting Properties on each will bring up the properties for that particular adapter.  "Uncheck" the line Check Point SecuRemote for each adapter except for the one that contains "PPPoE" in the title.

Windows NT

We have not been able to get SecuRemote to work with a BellSouth DSL connection on Windows NT.

Windows 9x and ME

These instructions are for use with the Windows 9x or ME operating system with a DSL connection to the Internet using the Enternet 300 software from Efficient Networks.

Ensure that you have connectivity to your ISP before installing SecuRemote. You may need your operating system installation CD.

Record your current TCP/IP settings for your Network Interface Card (NIC). Right click Network Neighborhood. Select Properties. In the new window General tab, scroll down to "TCP/IP -> NIC". Select it and then click Properties. If it is specifying an IP address, write down this information.

Install SecuRemote, refer to the installation instructions, and select "Install on all network adapters" when prompted. It will ask you to reboot.

After the reboot, install TCP/IP again. Right click Network Neighborhood. Select Properties. In the new window, click on Add. Use Microsoft TCP/IP. It will put an entry in for TCP/IP -> NIC. Note that there is no "FW1" in this line. Click on this and click Properties. Put in your TCP/IP settings you wrote down for your NIC earlier.

In the properties for the NIC adapter, unbind all "FW1" items. Click the green board icon next to your NIC and click Properties. Ensure that only TCP/IP is bound.

In the properties for the PPPoE adapter, unbind TCP/IP. Click the green board icon next to your PPPoE adapter and click Properties. Ensure that only "FW1" is bound. Click OK and then OK again to close the Network Neighborhood properties and then it should ask you to reboot.

Run your NTS/EnterNet client like you were going to connect. It should ask you what adapter to use. DO NOT select FW1. Select your NIC. If it does not ask which adapter, set up a new profile and tell it to use the NIC.

EarthLink DSL

This should work for all Windows operating systems. EarthLink supports the use of Fine Point Networks's WinPoET PPPoE client for their DSL customers. They also support the use of Windows XP's native DSL client.  In either case, the installation of SecuRemote is the same. Ensure that you have connectivity to your ISP before installing SecuRemote. Install SecuRemote, refer to the installation instructions, and select "Install on dial-up adapters only" when prompted.
